IUD Q & A

What is an IUD?

An IUD is a small T-shaped device that is inserted in your uterus to prevent pregnancy.

How do IUDs work?

There are two main types of IUDs — copper and hormonal — and each works to prevent pregnancy in different ways.

A hormonal IUD slowly releases progestin, which thins your uterine tissue and interferes with your ovulation. The hormone also causes the mucus around your cervix to thicken, which prevents sperm from making its way through.

A copper IUD is a device that’s wrapped in copper wire, which is toxic to both sperm and your eggs, preventing the two from meeting. There are no hormones in the copper IUD.

What are the benefits of an IUD?

No matter which type of IUD you choose, their benefits are similar and include:

  • 99% protection rate
  • Long-term protection, from 5-10 years
  • Low maintenance
  • Easily removable at any time
  • Safe for  breastfeeding

Which IUD is best for me?

The team at OBGYN Westside believes that contraception is a very individual choice. At your visit, your provider reviews your medical history, your lifestyle, and your goals, and helps you make the best decision for your health and lifestyle.

How is the IUD placed?

IUD placement is easy and performed in the office. Using an applicator tube, the IUD is inserted vaginally through the cervix and into your uterus, where the device is released.

IUD insertion takes only minutes and there’s no downtime afterward. Removing an IUD is just as simple and can be accomplished in a quick office visit.
